Grammar in the United States

It was once said in a movie a long time ago that depending in which part of the country one is in at any one given time will determine just how smart or stupid that person is at that point in time. It’s true! If you have traveled around the U.S., enough you will know that some things have different meanings or names according to what part of the country you are in.

For instance, in the northeastern U.S., automobiles are “cars”, delicatessen sandwiches are called “heroes”, the baskets one uses at a supermarket is called “a shopping cart”, soft drinks are called “soda” and flipping the light switch is called “turning on the lights”. Now go 950 miles south to the southeastern U.S., an automobile is a “truck”, sandwiches are “subs”, shopping baskets are “buggies”, soft drinks are called “pop”, and flipping the light switch is “cutting on the lights”. These are just examples. In the southwest and northwest these terms or words are completely different!

One would guess that this is why the English language is so hard to learn, we have in some cases, anywhere from two to four words for any given object! It’s understandable how someone new to the country would get confused real fast! It would be safe to say though as far a language goes that the worst part of the country is the southeastern U.S. They have words here that are not even words! It takes some real getting used to. Sometimes you think to yourself that these people need to carry around a pocket Grammar Check! I’m serious, they have SOUNDS here that mean something to them! What’s scary though, if you live here long enough, you start speaking and acting just like them! It’s enough to send cold shivers up ones spine!
